Polar Star

"Having sailed on the Polar Star, I can honestly say she is an incredible vessel, perfectly suited for expedition travel in Antarctica. This ship was completely retrofitted for passenger comfort in 2000-2001. Owned and operated by a Norwegian shipping company, she lives up to her Scandinavian heritage. Not only is Polar Star a fast, extremely stable vessel, she has a touch of “Old World Class" with her polished wood, brass, and leather sofas in the public areas. She also meets all the international standards and regulations for safety and the environment.

The ship is comfortable, but not a luxury liner. Cabins are spacious and the chefs prepare a sumptuous and international variety of dishes for your dining enjoyment. There is also a nice selection of wines to accompany your meals. The ship features a comfortable dining hall, a large panoramic lounge, a lecture room, a library, and a saloon bar.

The cabins are bright and have large picture windows, not portholes, and except for a few triple share cabins have private facilities (Shower/toilets, no bath tubs). All the basic cabins(K3) are twin lower berths, approx. 115 sq. ft., while the mini-suites and suites are, 180 and 250 sq. ft. respectively. Mini-suites have double beds and one suite has a double and the other one has twin beds.

The ship has an ‘open bridge policy’, so passengers are always welcome. The bridge is a great place to learn about the working of an ice-breaker, navigation, and quite often it provides an incredible opportunity for story-telling.

The observation lounge is one of the best viewing areas of any vessel I have sailed on. Large picture windows on three sides, with a large aft deck. All the passengers can gather here for the many lectures, and functions."
