Norwegian Fjords

The rich landscapes of Southern Norway, including Sognefjord -- the longest and deepest fjord in the world -- are the ideal prelude to your adventure above the Arctic Circle. Thundering waterfalls plunge to the sea at Gudvangen and Flaam. Tiny hamlets cling to the side of steep-walled fjords. Have your camera ready.

Day 1 - U.S./Bergen, Norway

Fly from Newark to Bergen (via Copenhagen) on an overnight flight aboard SAS Scandinavian Airlines.

Day 2 - Bergen

Arrive in the Hansa city of Bergen. The powerful Hanseatic League once ruled the seas of Northern Europe. Check in to the First Hotel Marin. Dinner is served at the hotel. (D)

Day 3 - Bergen

Today's a full day in Bergen. First up, the town center and its colorful fish and flower market. The Hanseatic Museum details the history of the Germanic merchants who banded together to protect their shipping interests. Visits to St. Mary's Church and the rebuilt Fantoft Stave Church as well as composer Edvard Greig's home at Troldhaugen round out the morning. After lunch, we ride the funicular to the city's apex for an extraordinary view. (B,L)

Day 4 - Bergen/Ullensvang

Our day begins along the shores of the Sorfjord and Hardanger Fjord. Steep mountain slopes and cascading waterfalls greet you at every bend. We cruise via ferry across the fjord from Kvanndal to Utne to Kisarvik and drive on to Ullensvang and the Ullensvang Hotel. Check in and enjoy dinner here. (B,L,D)

Day 5 - Ullensvang/Gudvangen/Flaam/Oslo

Nature has carved quite a portrait in Norway. The Tvindefoss Waterfall and Lake Oppheim are today's opening act. The hairpin curves of Stalheim Canyon through the Naeroydal Valley to Gudvangen are truly breathtaking. Sail from Gudvangen through the fjords of Naeroy and both arms of the Sogne to Flaam for lunch. The Flaam railroad ascends 2,900 feet in less than an hour. The train from Myrdal returns us to Oslo and the Continental Hotel. Dinner is on board the train. (B,L,D)

Day 6 - Oslo

This morning you may relax before meeting the rest of our group for an afternoon exploration of Oslo. Highlights include a stroll among the famed Vigeland sculptures set in parklands and a visit to the Polar Ship Fram Museum, with its excellent exhibits on the history of Arctic exploration. This evening try one of the harbor restaurants. (B)

Day 7 - Oslo/Longyearbyen/Embark Ship

Depart Oslo on our private charter flight to Longyearbyen and the National Geographic Endeavour. (B)

Days 8 through 15 follow the route from Day 4 of "Land of the Ice Bears" itinerary.
