On the west coast of Iceland, deep submarine canyons give berth to krill rich waters which attract humpback and fin whales. Further west the frozen pack ice which spills from the North Pole sweeps the coast of Greenland. This central east coast of Greenland contains the world’s largest fjords. These gigantic harbors are home to small populations of the most remote Inuit peoples. This wonderful voyage joins all these elements together. A small group of experienced divers will explore the underwater world of the fjords.
We board Polar Pioneer in Longyearbyen in the early afternoon, settle ourselves in and set sail in the evening.
We plan to sample the delights of the western edge of Spitsbergen, where the mountain glaciers pour into the sea in the beautiful Hornsund or adjacent bays.
We’ll be at sea all day, enjoying informative talks as we cruise southwest across the Greenland Sea. We’ll keep an eye out for seabirds, whales and pack ice that stretches north across the Arctic Ocean to the North Pole.
As we continue our Greenland Sea crossing and if conditions permit we should be able to make landfall at North East Greenland National Park. Home to polar bear, walrus, snowy
owl and musk ox, it’s the world’s largest national park.
If the pack ice allows, we’ll attempt to reach the breathtaking Kaiser Franz Josef Fjord and Scoresby Sound, the
world’s largest fjord. Massive glaciers that calve here form the birthplace of Greenland’s renowned giant icebergs.
We may visit remote Inuit communities and hike out onto the vast tundra. We'll always remain alert for any chance to launch our sea kayaks.
We explore the east Greenland coast, along the flanks of Knud Rasmussen Land.
We will be at sea all day, reflecting on our adventures as we cruise across the Denmark Strait and passing over submarine canyons that enrich the whale feeding grounds off Iceland's north-west coast.
Arrive in Keflavik, we'll bid farewell to the Polar Pioneer and her crew and transfer to our hotel in Reykjavik.
Warm sunshine, biting cold, freezing winds, swirling waves, mirrored seas, spray in your face, salt in your mouth and all felt so intensely when you are six inches from the water. What sights we have seen: inquisitive seals and walruses quickly appearing in our path; the beautiful guillemots gliding past our kayaks; the watchful eyes of a silently swimming polar bear. All this against the backdrop of majestic snow-and ice-covered mountain peaks and set amongst intricate formations of pack ice and icebergs of ingenious colour and design.
Itineraries may be subject to change.
