In just two days I am leaving for my voyage aboard the Expedition September 4 – 17 Arctic Highlights and Polar Bears. While I have traveled to the Polar Regions many times my anticipation of the coming experiences is hard to contain!
This voyage begins in Longyearbyen on the island of Spitsbergen a place that has wonderful memories of voyages past. After two days we will sail for East Greenland with its amazing icebergs and the hope of more Arctic wildlife. The journey concludes in Iceland – and after disembarking I am hoping to relax in the steam baths of the Blue Lagoon (that is so large it can be seen from outer space!).
While I have traveled to West Greenland before it will be my first time to East Greenland. I am excited to finally compare the two trips. So watch for Blog posts from the ship as I gather those "aha" moments Lynn mentioned in her Close Encounters of the Walrus Kind Blog.
It is getting toward the end of the Arctic season which means that there will be dark nights and that means a close watch on the night sky for the aurora borealis and the incredible colors it can paint the heavens.
This voyage also includes a group from Hong Kong that brings high school students who have written essays to receive a grant to travel to this remote location. Watching them experience this incredible environment and interact with Inuit students in some of the villages should make this a memorable trip as well!
If scenery, native culture, wildlife, and the chance to see the Northern Lights interest you this is a great option. Here is a link to next season’s voyage which currently has a 15% early booking discount.
