No doubt this was
the best, most interesting trip we have been on. Better
than the Galapagos in that Antarctica is so remote. The Peregrine
staff was the big difference.
As perhaps the oldest couple on the trip they saw that we
handled all but the most difficult. This trip called for more
energy than many our age can sustain but we never felt left
out. The depth of knowledge, personal interest and just plain
joy of sharing their knowledge of this land was the big difference.
Akademik Ioffe is just the right vessel for this trip. We
lucked out on making the various landfalls.
Frank Hurley's daughter Toni (age 82) was with us and made
the landing on Elephant Island to stand where her father was
sheltered for 5 months while Shackleton went to South Georgia
for help. What a moment we shared!
At Grytviken I renewed my acquaintance with Pauline and Tim
Carr who I met in Chicago a few years ago and whose lecture
and book started Mim and I thinking about this trip. It will
be weeks before I sort out all the events of our journey.
And perhaps longer to edit our video and pictures but what
a pleasure it will be. Thanks for helping us experience this.
