South Pole & Emperor fly-in

Join us on an incredible adventure to one of nature’s rarest sights – an immense colony of 28,000 Emperor Penguins. Our ability to access the colony early in the season means you’ll see the chicks just as they are stepping off their parents’ feet. To capture this moment is to witness wildlife at its most extraordinary!

For centuries, the Last Continent has held a special place in our imaginations, yet even now, long after the first explorers reached the South Pole, access to the interior of Antarctica is still only for the very few.

After a five-hour flight from Cape Town, South Africa, we bring you into the heart of Antarctica, a place that is both surreal and majestic. From iridescent ice tunnels to vertical spires of rock, from endless uninhabited horizons to oceans scattered with icebergs, this is a place unlike anywhere else on Planet Earth.

Your visit to the penguins begins with a 2.5-hour flight to Atka Bay, the site of the first episode of Sir David Attenborough’s ground-breaking documentary Seven Worlds, One Planet. Here you’ll see over 14,000 breeding pairs, a spectacle full of noise and energy that is a favorite with wildlife watchers and photographers.

There are so few visitors to this colony that the chicks are unafraid of humans and often waddle close by. Mindful of our responsibility to the Antarctic environment and of IAATO guidelines, we keep at least 80ft (25m) from the penguins while taking in all the sights and sounds of this rare wildlife spectacle, which remains one of the greatest thrills on Earth!

This itinerary is entirely subject to weather conditions in Antarctica and is meant as an approximate guide of what clients can expect. The highest priority is given to visiting the Emperor penguin colony.

Day Prior to Departure

Cape Town is home to award-winning vineyards and stunning ocean vistas. it is often tipped as one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

We will host a safety briefing the day before the flight where our staff will explain all kit requirements, assist with any last minute preparations and update you as to the latest weather forecasts in Antarctica.

Day 1

You fly over thousands of icebergs on our 5-hour flight across the Southern Ocean to Antarctica. During the flight, you enter the Polar Circle and the continuous daylight of the Antarctic summer.

After landing on the specialist ice runway, you will settle in at Wolf’s Fang Explorer camp.

Day 2

Settle into ‘Wolf’s Fang’ camp and do as much or as little as you like each day. Activities range from gentle treks up a nearby Nunatak, ice climbing and even abseiling!

After the day’s activities you will hear a talk about the incredible life cycle of the emperor penguin in preparation for your visit the following day.

Day 3

You fly 2.5 hours across Antarctica on our BT-67 aircraft, enjoying immense views of the High Polar Plateau, before landing at the Emperor Penguin colony at Atka Bay.

Wrapped up in the sights and sounds of thousands of penguins, you will be among the very few who have ever witnessed such a spectacle, observing the real-life stars of March of the Penguins.

Day 4

A convoy of Arctic Trucks, and skidoos for the more adventurous, will traverse you across the glacier to the base of the Needle peak, so named as the rock explodes vertically out of the ice. An exciting rope walk has been set up at the base by our guides to help you safely navigate the interesting features of rock and ice. Late lunch will be served before the journey back to Wolf’s Fang explorer camp.

Day 5

We take a short flight to the Schirmacher oasis where we will explore a maze of ice waves created where the sea ice meets the Antarctic continent. At this stage of the season an impressive river of azure blue water rushes between the waves of ice finding its way back to the ocean.

Day 6

The flight out of Antarctica will be the last of your enduring Antarctic memories before you delve back into the vibrant energy of Africa. You will be transferred to your hotel where you will have a chance to relax and reflect on your Antarctic adventure!
