Fly the Drake — Magellan Explorer

Overview

Short on time? Don't want to experience the potentially rough seas of the Drake Passage? Then this adventure may be the one for you.

Jumping over Cape Horn and the mythical waters of the Drake Passage, we invite you to a unique experience that will take you to one of the most remote places on earth, the coldest, highest, windiest, driest, and most inhospitable continent - Antarctica.

EXPLORERS HOUSE EXPEDITION CENTER
Explorers House is an exclusive facility in Punta Arenas where our team helps you prepare for your expedition. You can attend briefings, try on expedition gear, practice wearing a life jacket, and learn how to board a Zodiac. At Explorers House you can interact with our team, review checklists, and get answers to any questions you may have about your trip, so you will be ready and confident when you arrive in Antarctica.

Explorers House also functions as our own private club. It provides a modern environment where you can relax with a cup of coffee, review a wonderful collection of Antarctic books, and get to know your travel companions as excitement over the upcoming adventure builds. Explorers House was designed by renowned architects and was built using green building practices. It features a commercial solar panel system for the production of electricity and heat.

FLY THE DRAKE
A two-hour flight takes you from Punta Arenas, in the Chilean Patagonia, directly to Antarctica where you board your expedition ship. You thereby avoid the stormy seas of the Drake Passage and experience only the best Antarctica has to offer.

CRUISE ANTARCTICA
A boutique-style wilderness adventure, not a cruise. Feeling more like a private yacht than a cruise ship, our small expedition vessels give us privileged access to Antarctica, allowing you to go where larger ships can’t.

KEY BENEFITS
COMFORT: Avoid storms in the Drake Passage
SPEED: Get to Antarctica quickly and save time
STYLE: Enjoy a small-ship, yacht-like experience

The Airplanes:

We use three similar aircraft for flight operations: the BAE 146-200, the AVRO RJ 85, and the AVRO RJ 100. These aircraft were manufactured in the United Kingdom by British Aerospace (which later became part of BAE Systems). They are high-wing aircraft with short runway requirements, which means they are particularly suited for this kind of destination. They are operated by Aerovías DAP, which have more than 25 years of experience flying in Patagonia and Antarctica.

Model: BAE 146-200
Engines: 4 turbofans Honeywell ALF 502R-5
Length: 93 ft 8 in (28,55 m)
Wingspan: 86 ft 5 in (26,34 m)
Cruise speed: 465 mph (750 km/h)
Service ceiling: 31,200 ft (9.500 m)
Capacity: 75 passengers

The Ship: Magellan Explorer

Strong and agile, Magellan Explorer has been developed from the ground up as the ideal platform for our air-cruise operations. Several international polar expedition experts have contributed to the design of the ship. Working with designers, engineers, and naval architects, they developed a wide range of technical solutions designed to enhance the expedition experience of guests.

Guest Centric Interior Design
The elegant interior spaces of the new vessel were designed by Enrique Concha & Co, a renowned interior design studio based in Santiago de Chile. Every detail, from colors, to materials, to lighting, has been carefully selected to enhance the traveler’s experience.  The result is a modern environment that provides comfort, style and efficiency.

Suites and Cabins
Five different accommodation categories are available to guests. Accommodations are spacious, ranging in size from 440 sq ft (40 sq m) to 220 sq ft (20 sq m). All suites and most cabins offer a private balcony. Sleeping arrangements can be configured as either one king-size bed or two twin beds, in most cases.

Amenities & Services
Public areas include a spacious forward-facing observation lounge and bar that is also used to deliver briefings and educational presentations.  The bow of the ship is accessible to guests; together with the outdoor observation deck it offers expansive views and close contact with the natural environment during exploration.  The dining room accommodates all guests and expedition staff in a single sitting.  There is also a meeting room, a library, a gift shop, a protected outdoor barbecue area, a gym, and a sauna. Adventure activities, such as kayaking and snowshoeing, are available.

The Vessel's Features
The ship is being built to the latest Polar Code specifications and carries a Polar Class 6 ice-class (Lloyd’s Register PC6). For comfortable navigation, the ship features stabilizers; for maneuverability, she features bow and stern thrusters. For safety in navigation, there is an ice-detecting radar. And to reduce the environmental footprint, the vessel is equipped with an energy-recovery system that recycles the heat produced by the engines to warm up the ship and its water supply.
